Firsts - UPWEY 12 defeated NEWPORT 5

Upwey finished its season in a most convincing manner, while the Rams dropped off somewhat in recent weeks after having a terrific first half to their season.

The Tigers scored in every innings except the third and the sixth, breaking the game open in a rollicking second dig that delivered seven runs and an insurmountable lead.

“We just kept swinging the bats and out-hit them all day,” said Upwey Manager Mitch Ayres.

Former Wildcat Luke Farrelly collected three knocks, Leon Rice three, Peter Schroeders three, Brad Harman and Ayres both two as Newport persevered with its younger pitching staff.

Starter Sean Meldrum kept the Rams well under wraps with six innings of work for five hits, Lucas Unland threw a couple and Adrian Rice closed the gate for Upwey, who finished eighth with fourteen wins – a more than adequate return for their first year back in Division One for a time.

“I was very happy with our all-round game,” Ayres said. “We turned six double plays for the day – usually at times when Newport looked dangerous.”

“Our goals were well-exceeded for the season. We picked up a couple of players – not big names – and hopefully we can really move on next season.”

“Today was a good way to finish.”
