Match Report Metro U/16 Round 8
This was a revenge match. Having drawn with Malvern 9-9 in Round 4, we were hosting them again for another game. With not a win to us this season, we wanted to make this the first.
As was the usual, Yarran Curtis was our starter for the game. He also pitched like he has done for the season; consistent & in the strike zone. This earned him a strikeout. Another good play was when Kristopher Recke on first base caught an infield fly, ending the inning. There was also some great backing up by Jayden Wearne.
When we came back to the dugout, Rob said to us “Alright, we're one run down, we need two. C'mon, make it happen.” We gave him more than he asked for. With some good batting, we got three runs in by smart baserunning & good hitting.
With some good defense, we managed to keep Malvern scoreless for the next four innings. In that time, we got 1 run in the 4th inning & 2 more in the 5th. There was a fortunate play where the Malvern baserunner came home on a passed ball (which Todd Sadler picked up very quickly) & in an effort to avoid the ball, he jumped over the base, but never touched it. He walked off to the dugout, but no run was scored & he was put out.
At the top of the 6th, Yarran was taken off the mound (his pitch count was up) to a cheering crowd, & replaced by Jayden Wearne. He did a good job closing the game.
The last bit of the game saw some epic catches. Bryce Mazzarella (the other Cheesy) made a running fly ball catch twice. Well done. Daniel Munter, playing center-field also did the same in the 6th. Corey Everitt on third base, caught a line drive, & also caught an infield fly in the same inning to finish the game.
Another honourable mention goes to Todd Sadler (Catcher) who virtually got every pitch & didn't let them go behind him. On the rare occasion he did, he knew exactly where it was & stopped the runners from taking a base. The middle infield (Jakson Hunkin, shortstop & Jayden Wearne, second base) did a excellent job of holding the runners on second.
We fininshed our 5 game home series with a win, & are heading off next week to Ormond/Glenhuntly, where we hopefully can play as well as we did last week.
